conservapedia

February 28, 2007

I have just discovered conservapedia.com, a “much-needed alternative to Wikipedia, which is increasingly anti-Christian and anti-American.”
My initial alarm has turned to laughter as I browsed the site. Check out these gems:

New Zealand
The early New Zealand population survived by growing bananas, coconuts, yams and taro, and also by raising dogs and pigs. (Unfortunately this is the entire entry. Anybody who has ever visited here would be quite aware that bananas and coconuts do not grow at all well in our climate!)

Honduras
There is no page titled “Honduras”.

Latin America (in history essay)
…Communism remains a threat to the United States in the Latin American countries of Cuba and Venezuela…

Being a wiki, it seems the site has been an irresistible target for liberal humour-

Jesus
The name Jesus is simply the name “Joshua” translated first into Greek, then English. In Christian discourse, the name Jesus almost always refers specifically to Jesus of Nazareth, believed by Christian followers to be God’s dad, who came to earth as a human c 2 AD. However, God has recently revealed on His blog that Jesus is actually His nephew, not His son. [1]

Bill Clinton
…Bill Clinton managed to serve two terms without botching the prosecution of two wars, manipulating intelligence, engaging in a systematic program of torture, or mishandling the federal response to flooding of a major American city. Obviously, he is the devil incarnate…

Kangaroo
…Like all modern animals, modern kangaroos originated in the Middle East[1] and are the descendants of the two founding members of the modern kangaroo baramin that were taken aboard Noah’s Ark prior to the Great Flood. It has not yet been determined whether kangaroos form a holobaramin with the wallaby, tree-kangaroo, wallaroo, pademelon and quokka, or if all these species are in fact apobaraminic or polybaraminic….

Apparently the entry for sex used to be:
1. The process by which offspring are conceived.
2. Another term for gender.
But even this appears to have been deleted and there is now no entry for sex. Perhaps conservatives have no need for it? I suspect it may be that the topic is just a little too difficult for them to handle.

Given that “Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world… (and) its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet” any “anti American” and “anti-Christian” bias must be reflective of it’s users. We should perhaps be grateful that it seems that the conservatives didn’t actually realise they could just edit wikipedia articles to counter the alleged bias.
Sean from Cosmic Variance notes that sites like conservapedia this should ensure that “future generations of conservatives grow up really dumb”. I’m not so sure that’s a good thing, especially with the power they seem to hold in the US. But at least it seems a lot of people are having a good laugh.
